Vehicle theft trends and digital reporting tools in Peru and Mexico
In Peru, the National Superintendency of Public Registries (Sunarp) is utilizing its digital platform ‘Alerta Robo’ to combat vehicle theft. The tool allows owners to report stolen cars immediately using their Electronic Vehicle Identification Card (TIVe), which automatically distributes alerts across Sunarp services. So far in 2026, 846 alerts have been registered. The system acts as a real-time verification filter for citizens looking to purchase used vehicles.
In Mexico, data from the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS) shows a 16% decrease in the theft of insured vehicles over the last year. A total of 50,891 insured vehicles were stolen, the lowest figure in 15 years. Rapid reporting is critical for recovery, as 60% of recovered vehicles were located because the theft was reported within four to six hours. Despite the national decline, the State of Mexico remains the region with the highest incidence, reporting 11,799 cases.
