Vehicle visibility and wiper maintenance highlighted for road safety
Maintaining vehicle visibility, particularly through functional windshield wipers and washer systems, is critical for road safety during rain. Experts note that rain can increase the risk of traffic accidents by more than 31 percent due to reduced visibility and slower driver reaction times.
During a discussion marking 100 years of Bosch wiper technology innovation in Jakarta, officials from the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation emphasized that road safety relies on a synergy between road-worthy vehicles, competent drivers, and supportive infrastructure. Heri Prabowo, Sub-director of Motor Vehicle Testing at the Ministry, highlighted that collaborations between government and industry are essential for public safety education.
Automotive observers from the Bandung Institute of Technology advise drivers to monitor wiper performance; signs of degradation include leaving water streaks, making noise, or uneven movement. To mitigate risks during heavy rain, drivers are encouraged to reduce speed, increase following distances, use appropriate lighting, and pull over to a safe location if visibility becomes severely compromised.
