Vehicle weight and trailer safety warnings for summer travelers

As summer travel increases, authorities are warning drivers about the risks and legal consequences of overloading vehicles and improperly towing trailers.

Experts from the German organization TÜV Süd note that overloaded vehicles significantly alter driving characteristics, increasing braking distances and reducing stability in corners. Police are conducting stricter inspections during the summer months. Fines can be issued for exceeding the maximum allowed mass by as little as five percent, and in some countries, such as Germany, drivers may face heavy fines and penalty points. In cases of excessive weight, police may prohibit the vehicle from continuing its journey until the excess luggage or passengers are removed.

Regarding trailers, the Agency for Traffic Safety (AVP) emphasizes that drivers must ensure they have the correct license category. While category B allows for light trailers up to 750 kg or heavier combinations up to 3,500 kg, heavier loads require B96 or BE categories. Drivers are advised to inspect tow bars, safety cables, electrical connections, lights, and tires before departure. Additionally, if a trailer obscures the vehicle's license plate or lights, an additional plate holder must be installed.
