Vejdirektoratet launches motorway safety campaign
The Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) has launched a new road safety campaign to address issues regarding driving distances on motorways. A study conducted by Epinion for the Directorate reveals that 88 percent of drivers experience other motorists cutting into their lane with insufficient distance.
Among those surveyed, 63 percent consider this a large or very large problem, while 27 percent view it as a medium-sized problem. The campaign, which runs until October 18, aims to expand the focus from maintaining distance to the car ahead to also considering the distance left for the vehicle behind when changing lanes after overtaking.
Marianne Foldberg Steffensen, head of traffic safety at Vejdirektoratet, emphasized that cutting in too early reduces the reaction time that the following driver has established. Rear-end collisions and accidents involving tailgating account for more than half of all personal injury accidents on motorways.
