Vela Spila cave preserves 20,000 years of history on Korčula

The Vela Spila cave, located on the slopes of Pinski Rat on the island of Korčula, serves as a significant prehistoric archaeological site. The limestone cave features two natural openings in the ceiling that allow daylight to enter the space.

Archaeological investigations have been conducted at the site for several decades, with systematic research involving the Institute of Archaeology of JAZU beginning in the mid-20th century. Excavations have uncovered a diverse range of archaeological materials at depths of up to 11 meters, providing insights into human history spanning approximately 20,000 years.
