Velando 2 initiative uses sailing for disability inclusion in Italy
The national velatherapy and social inclusion program, ‘Velando 2’, has launched its latest stages across Italy. Promoted by the Ministry for Disabilities, the initiative uses sailing activities to promote autonomy, psychological well-being, and social inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
In Imperia, the program involves young people with autism spectrum disorder, supported by Handarpermare APS, the ASL Città di Torino, and Professor Roberto Keller. The project aims to foster self-esteem by allowing participants to take active roles on board, such as steering or managing sails.
In La Spezia, the initiative focuses on patients with hematological pathologies through a collaboration between the Italian Navy and AIL. This stage of the ‘Giro d’Italia della velaterapia’ allows patients and doctors to experience life at sea alongside naval personnel to encourage collaboration, contact with nature, and personal recovery. The national tour includes stops in Augusta, Anzio, Naples, Livorno, Cagliari, Venice, Taranto, and Ancona.
