Velebit Channel search: One Portuguese tourist found dead, two rescued

A search and rescue operation in Croatia’s Velebit Channel has resulted in tragedy for a group of four Portuguese tourists. The group was caught in a severe storm with winds reaching 110 km/h while traveling in a small 1.5-meter inflatable boat.

Two members of the group were rescued alive on Wednesday: a woman who spent approximately eight to ten hours in the water and a man found on the rocks near Cape Glavina. The woman was treated at the Rijeka Clinical Hospital Center for exhaustion and pre-drowning syndrome before being discharged.

On Thursday morning, authorities recovered the body of a third Portuguese man from the sea near Zavratnica Bay on the island of Krk. The body was spotted by a police helicopter and retrieved by the Senj Port Authority. As of the latest reports, search efforts continue to locate the fourth missing individual, with rescue teams utilizing helicopters and maritime vessels to expand the search area toward Vrbnik and Cape Druženin.
