Velence Mountains geological history and granite formations

The Velence Mountains in Hungary represent one of the country's oldest even-sided mountain ranges, characterized by its geological history dating back approximately 300 million years to the Paleozoic era. The region is primarily composed of granite, a coarse-crystalline deep magmatic rock formed during the Variscan orogeny.

Geological features in the area, such as the Sukoró region and the Olasz-Kőfejtő, offer insights into the area's evolution, including volcanic activity from the Eocene epoch and the subsequent subsidence of the mountains during the Pliocene. Notable formations include the 'Gyapjaszsák' rock structure and various erratic boulders shaped by erosion and seismic activity.
