Velencei Lake water level plummets to historic low, could reach 30 cm by summer’s end

The water level of Hungary’s Velencei Lake fell to just 52 cm on 20 June, a new record lower than the previous low set in 2022. Experts warn that, if the current dry spell and high evaporation continue, the lake could shrink to around 30 cm by the end of summer.

The drop threatens local tourism: several beaches have already limited or halted services, and the shallow water raises concerns about water quality and the lake’s ecosystem. Residents and visitors still attempt to enjoy the shoreline, with some noting water temperatures of 30‑35 °C near the shore. Filmmaker Gergő Pápai has documented the changes with drone footage, highlighting how drought, climate change, and past water‑management decisions have amplified the situation.

Authorities suggest long‑term solutions such as improving water‑retention systems and restoring natural habitats, alongside short‑term measures like water supplementation, to mitigate the impact on the lake’s recreational and ecological value.
