Velhos Amigos project expands to Lisbon to combat elderly isolation

The ‘Velhos Amigos’ project, promoted by the association Atlas – People Like Us, is expanding to the Anjos area of Lisbon to combat loneliness and social isolation among the elderly. The initiative, which has already operated in regions such as Leiria, Coimbra, and Pombal, provides weekend meals and emotional support through a network of local volunteers.

Singer Iolanda Costa serves as an ambassador for the project. The initiative relies on a model of regular, continuous monitoring by stable volunteer teams to build trust with beneficiaries. In 2025, the project supported 84 elderly individuals, distributed 6,929 meals with the help of 71 partner restaurants, and mobilized over 8,900 volunteer hours. Beyond food delivery, the project offers psychological support, health monitoring, and free medical consultations in ophthalmology and dentistry for those in need.
