Velika Gorica advances waste management and recycling infrastructure
Velika Gorica has made significant progress in its waste management systems, moving toward a circular economy and pursuing a Zero Waste certificate. The city has expanded its infrastructure, notably with the opening of a new recycling yard in Kurilovac in March 2025. This facility allows citizens to dispose of over 40 types of waste for free, including paper, plastic, glass, electronic, bulky, green, and hazardous household waste.
In 2025, the city's recycling yards collected 7,000 tons of separated waste. Mayor Krešimir Ačkar noted that increasing collection rates reflect changing citizen habits and pledged continued investment in infrastructure and education. Additionally, the city has implemented a bio-waste separation system, distributing approximately 9,000 home composters to residents and providing specialized bins for multi-family residential buildings.
