Veltins-Arena celebrates 25 years with planned Real Madrid test match
The Veltins‑Arena in Gelsenkirchen turns 25 on 18 August 2026, marking a quarter‑century since its opening in 2001. Over that period the venue has hosted more than 750 major events, including football, concerts by international stars such as Taylor Swift and the Rolling Stones, and the yearly World Team Challenge biathlon competition.
To commemorate the milestone, FC Schalke 04 is negotiating a high‑profile friendly against Real Madrid, tentatively set for 16 August. Discussions are in the final stage, with the clubs working out financial and logistical details. If confirmed, the match would be the first appearance of the Spanish side in the arena since 2015 and could feature marquee players such as Kylian Mbappé or Jude Bellingham. Schalke is also scheduled to begin its DFB‑Pokal campaign on 24 August.
