Argentina begins plan to transfer Devoto inmates to Marcos Paz

The National Government and the City of Buenos Aires have signed an agreement to transfer approximately 1,500 inmates from the Devoto prison to the Federal Penitentiary Complex VIII in Marcos Paz. This move is part of the “Ley y Orden” (Law and Order) Plan, which aims to permanently close the Devoto facility to allow for urban redevelopment and the creation of green spaces.

The transfer will be carried out in stages and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. To manage the operation, a Federal Unified Command has been established under the coordination of the National Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service (SPF). This command includes the Federal Police, Gendarmerie, Airport Security Police, Naval Prefecture, and the SPF.

Officials, including Karina Milei, Jorge Macri, and Alejandra Monteoliva, participated in the signing of the provisional reception act for the Marcos Paz complex. The new facility has a capacity for 2,240 detainees and includes administrative buildings, health areas, educational spaces, and workshops. The operational plan will account for the criminological profiles of the inmates to ensure security during transit and prevent incidents such as escapes or riots.
