Vendée reports lower mosquito populations this summer
Mosquito populations in the Vendée department of France have been lower than usual this summer. Local authorities, through a mosquito regulation unit established in 2020, have confirmed a decrease in sightings compared to previous years.
Officials attribute this decline to climatic conditions during the spring and summer, which limited the availability of stagnant water surfaces. This reduction in standing water has hindered the proliferation of mosquito larvae. However, authorities warn that the situation remains sensitive; heavy rainfall or significant tidal shifts could create new stagnant water areas, potentially leading to new outbreaks. Additionally, rising temperatures have been noted to accelerate larval development.
