Vendée town demands state compensation for stadium damage caused by travellers
In the Vendée department, the municipality of Nieul‑le‑Dolent reported that a two‑week illegal occupation of its stadium by a group of travellers left the football pitches, guardrails and surrounding areas heavily damaged. The town estimates the clean‑up, waste removal, water consumption and turf repairs will cost several thousand euros. Emmanuel Ferré, the mayor’s first deputy, said the occupants offered no apology or compensation and that insurance claims were unlikely to succeed, describing a “deep feeling of abandonment.” The municipality filed a complaint, alerted the prefecture and now seeks indemnisation from the French state. A similar incident earlier in the department, in Givrand, involved 12 caravans and a claimed loss of about €35,000, highlighting ongoing tensions over the financial and administrative burden of such occupations on local authorities.
