Venice lagoon boat crash kills newlywed couple

A boating collision in the Venice lagoon has resulted in the deaths of a newlywed couple, Sean Michieli, 25, and Gabriella Querino, 26. The incident occurred in the Tessera Canal during the early morning of September 12, when the couple’s small vessel was struck by a water taxi.

Michieli, an Italian resident of Burano, died in the hospital following a traumatic head injury. Querino, a Brazilian national who was reportedly pregnant with the couple’s first child, was thrown from the boat and her body was recovered near the island of Campalto four days later.

Authorities have opened a nautical homicide investigation. A 38-year-old water taxi driver is under scrutiny for suspected manslaughter. The driver, who was transporting two American tourists to Marco Polo Airport at the time, claimed he only saw the vessel at the moment of impact. Venice Mayor Simone Venturini expressed condolences to the families, describing the event as a tragedy that has gripped the city.

Legal representatives for the Michieli family have indicated they may pursue legal action and are awaiting autopsy results to clarify the dynamics of the crash and address rumors regarding a reported argument between the couple prior to the accident.
