Veneto approves law recognizing and supporting family caregivers

The Veneto Regional Council has unanimously approved a new law to recognize and support family caregivers. The legislation aims to integrate these individuals into the regional social and healthcare service networks, acknowledging the social and economic value of those who provide voluntary, unpaid care to relatives with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or non-self-sufficiency.

Key provisions of the law include psychological support, training, relief measures, and the use of telemedicine. Specific protections are included for young caregivers under 24, offering educational credits and work-study balance tools, as well as for caregivers over 65. The measure affects an estimated 260,000 people in the Veneto region.

While the law passed, opposition members have called for more robust economic and social security protections, noting that many caregivers are forced to abandon work or sacrifice their health. The regional initiative seeks to formalize the role of caregivers within individualized care plans without replacing public services.
