Veneto Regional Council approves medically assisted suicide law

The Veneto Regional Council has approved a law regulating the procedures and timelines for medically assisted suicide. The measure passed with 32 votes in favor, 14 against, and 5 abstentions, making Veneto the fourth Italian region to adopt such legislation, following Tuscany, Sardinia, and Emilia-Romagna. Notably, it is the first region governed by a center-right administration to do so.

The law focuses on the organizational and healthcare pathways within the regional health service rather than creating new legal rights, as the practice was already decriminalized under specific conditions by the Constitutional Court's 2019 ruling. The regulation aims to ensure uniform and transparent procedures for patients meeting the legal criteria, including the verification of their capacity to make free and informed decisions.

While supporters, including the Associazione Luca Coscioni and various civil rights groups, welcome the move as a way to provide certainty to suffering patients, the decision has faced criticism. Religious leaders and some political figures expressed concerns regarding the potential for a slippery slope and the impact on the dignity of life. Meanwhile, some political actors are calling for a unified national law to prevent regional disparities in healthcare access.
