Veneto detects Oriental fruit fly for the first time

The Oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) has been detected for the first time in the Veneto region of Italy. The insect, identified by the regional Phytosanitary Service during monitoring activities in the Favaro Veneto area of Venice, is classified by the European Union as a priority quarantine pest.

In response, the Veneto Region has initiated control and containment procedures in accordance with European regulations. A two-year project has been launched in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Verona. This initiative aims to verify the extent of the insect population, monitor its spread, determine its origin, and identify high-risk areas.

Regional Agriculture Councilor Dario Bond stated that while there is no need for alarmism, the phenomenon should not be underestimated, as the pest can damage numerous fruit and vegetable species. The response protocol will combine territorial monitoring with scientific research and advanced analytical technologies to protect the region's agricultural heritage.
