Veneto evaluates robotic dogs to protect livestock from wolves

Veneto Agricoltura, in collaboration with the University of Padua, is evaluating the use of robotic dogs to protect livestock from wolf predation in the mountainous and hilly areas of the Veneto region. These high-tech devices are intended to act as dynamic sentinels to complement existing electric fences. Their primary functions include patrolling pasture perimeters to detect living beings and activating deterrent systems to ward off wildlife before they reach the herds.

However, the proposal has faced criticism from regional councilor Stefano Valdegamberi. He argues that the technology does not account for the economic realities or the operational difficulties faced by extensive livestock farmers. Valdegamberi has called for more concrete containment plans for the wolf population, suggesting that the robotic solution is disconnected from the daily needs and practical management of mountain pastures.
