Veneto expands hunting ban due to rabbit virus outbreak

The Veneto region in Italy has expanded its hunting ban on hares following the spread of myxomatosis, a virus also known as the rabbit virus. A regional decree extends the prohibition to 12 additional hunting areas and 7 alpine districts, effective from November 7 until November 30.

The ban covers a significant portion of the region, as Veneto has 28 total hunting areas. Previous restrictions had been in place since October 30 in several other districts.

According to the Bruno Ubertini Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute, the ha-Myxovirus (Toledo-MYXV) was first detected in Italy in September. This recombinant strain is capable of infecting both rabbits and hares. An initial outbreak was identified in August at a hare farm in the province of Padua, with subsequent cases found in wild hares in the Padua and Venice hunting areas.

The strain first appeared in Spain in 2018 and has since spread through Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary.
