Veneto experiences 52% drop in October rainfall compared to historical average

The Veneto region in Italy is facing a significant rainfall deficit, with October 2026 seeing an average of 60 mm of precipitation compared to the historical average of 125 mm. According to reports from Arpav, this represents a 52% decrease from the 1991-2020 norm.

This shortage is impacting groundwater levels, river flows, and snow reserves. All major hydrographic basins in the region show relevant deficits, with the most critical reductions occurring in the Fissero-Tartaro-Canal Bianco (-66%), Bacino Scolante (-63%), Brenta (-56%), and Adige (-54%) basins. Other rivers, including the Po, Piave, and Tagliamento, also reported negative deviations.

The cumulative deficit for the current calendar year has reached -178 mm. Groundwater levels in the high plains remain exceptionally low for the season, comparable to or worse than the autumn of 2022. Additionally, river flows remain significantly below historical averages despite temporary increases late in the month.
