Veneto faces significant water deficit and record heat in summer 2026

The Veneto region in Italy experienced a significant water deficit during August 2026. According to ARPAV data, average rainfall was 87 mm, representing a 12% deficit compared to the 1991-2020 historical average. The cumulative hydrological deficit since the start of the year has reached 23%. River flows in major waterways have dropped between 35% and 77% below historical averages.

Reservoir levels show varying conditions: the Piave river is near 2022 levels, while the Brenta remains above historical averages. Specific reservoir capacities include Pieve di Cadore at 38% and Corlo at 48% of their historical averages. Groundwater levels in the upper plains are also declining, though they remain above the historic lows recorded in 2022.

In response to the heatwave and precipitation shortage, the Federation of Agronomists and Foresters of Veneto is calling for a redesign of urban infrastructure. Experts suggest that the period between June 1 and August 18, 2026, was the hottest since regional monitoring began, surpassing 2003. To mitigate future climate risks, professionals recommend implementing permeable surfaces, rain gardens, drainage trenches, and improved urban greenery to manage both water scarcity and extreme weather events.
