Veneto faces surge in elderly population, urges expanded home‑care and territorial health services

By 2050, people aged 65 and over will account for more than 34% of the population, and the number of residents over 80 in Veneto is projected to double. The region already records a negative natural balance, with about 30,000 births versus over 50,000 deaths in 2024, and an ageing index of 203 %. Experts at the ANAP Confartigianato Persone Veneto conference highlighted the strain on the health‑care system, noting that more than 65 % of those over 75 have at least two chronic conditions and that the number of general practitioners has fallen by 40 %.

The discussion called for strengthening home‑care services so that more seniors can remain at home longer, expanding community‑housing options, and reorganising territorial medicine. Data from ISTAT and Uripa underscore the urgency, with projections that one in three Venetians will be over 65 by 2050 and the over‑80 cohort rising from 382,000 to 603,000.
