Italy expands AI integration across industry and public sectors

Italy is seeing a significant expansion of artificial intelligence across various sectors, from industrial manufacturing to public administration. A new publication titled ‘Umanesimo Tecnologico: le eccellenze italiane nell’Intelligenza Artificiale’, produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and curated by AIRI, highlights 84 examples of Italian excellence. These include humanoid robots for shipyards and logistics optimization systems.

In the public sector, Minister Paolo Zangrillo reported that over 75% of public employees already use AI tools, with 80% viewing them as useful for automation and data analysis. The government is implementing ecosystems like ‘Agorà’ and toolkits like ‘Minerva’ to manage these technologies.

However, legal and ethical challenges remain. New legislation allows for biometric facial recognition in criminal investigations, though concerns have been raised regarding the lack of judicial oversight during the prevention phase. Additionally, discussions continue regarding the environmental costs of AI and its reliability for content creation.
