Veneto Regional Council to vote on end-of-life legislation

The Veneto Regional Council is set to vote on a controversial end-of-life law regarding medically assisted suicide. The proposal, initiated by the Associazione Luca Coscioni, follows a constitutional court ruling that established specific criteria under which assisting a death is not punishable.

Luca Zaia, President of the Veneto Region, has supported the debate, stating that the vote is about personal freedom rather than deciding whether assisted suicide should exist, as it is already permitted under strict national legal frameworks. He emphasized that the decision should not be driven by political positioning or electoral calculations.

The debate has drawn significant opposition and diverse perspectives. The Movimento per la Vita Italiano has appealed to the Council to protect the dignity of the healthcare system, arguing against a “culture of waste” that might treat the vulnerable as disposable. Conversely, some political figures argue that the matter should be handled at a national level rather than by individual regions to ensure uniform rights across Italy.

Religious and theological groups have also weighed in, with the Faculty of Theology of the Triveneto urging a dialogue that distinguishes between assisted suicide and essential palliative care or advanced treatment directives.
