Veneto suspends diesel Euro5 ban affecting 325,000 vehicles
The Veneto regional government, led by President Alberto Stefani, announced it will suspend the planned ban on diesel Euro 5 vehicles that was to take effect on 1 October 2026. The ban would have applied to roughly 325,000 diesel Euro 5 cars and vans operating in the region.
The regional executive (Giunta) approved a decree to halt the restriction and the proposal now moves to the Regional Council for ratification in September. To compensate for the continued emissions, Veneto is studying alternative measures, including an early tender for converting diesel Euro 5 vehicles to dual‑fuel technology, enhanced public‑transport services and smart‑working arrangements during PM10 alerts. The move follows similar postponements in Lombardy, Piedmont and Emilia‑Romagna, reflecting tensions between EU decarbonisation targets and local socioeconomic realities.
