Lecce defeat Venezia 2-0 in Serie A season opener

Lecce secured a 2-0 away victory against Venezia in their Serie A season opener at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo. Despite Venezia controlling much of the play and having two goals disallowed by VAR—one for a handball by Correia and another for a Toma Basic offside—Lecce proved more clinical.

Olaf Gorter opened the scoring early in the second half with a long-range shot that took a deflection. Tiago Gabriel doubled the lead in the 80th minute to seal the win for Eusebio Di Francesco’s side. Venezia manager Giovanni Stroppa noted that while his team showed ambition, they struggled with physical readiness and tactical gaps.

Gorter, an Ajax academy product, marked his first start in Serie A with the decisive opening goal. Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone made several key saves to maintain the clean sheet against Venezia's attacks.
