Venezuela: 42 women remain detained for political reasons
The NGO Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón (JEP) reports that at least 42 women remain detained for political reasons in Venezuela. According to the organization’s updated registry as of October 2, there are a total of 424 people categorized as political prisoners, including these 42 women.
This updated figure follows recent releases of 29 individuals following a second round of talks between government and opposition representatives. JEP noted that 17 of those released were not previously included in their specific registry due to the organization’s methodological criteria.
The data shows that the majority of these women were detained between 2024 and 2025, with 17 arrests occurring in 2024—many within an electoral context—and 14 in 2025. Other detentions date back to previous years, including 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Most of the women identified belong to civil society. One specific case involves a 61-year-old woman in the Capital District whose status is recorded as forced disappearance.
