Venezuela launches reconstruction plan following devastating June earthquakes
Following the devastating earthquakes on June 24, the Venezuelan government has launched a multi-faceted recovery and reconstruction plan. The official death toll stands at 6,509, with approximately 18,000 people left homeless. A rapid evaluation of 63,568 buildings in affected zones has classified 36,910 as habitable, 15,000 as requiring partial restriction, and 11,658 as non-habitable.
To facilitate reconstruction, the Ministry of Transport is calling for civil engineers, structural calculation firms, and architecture students to participate in repair and reinforcement projects. A new, more rigorous seismic emergency building code is being developed to improve structural resistance. Additionally, the government has signed a contract with Miyamoto International to remove three million metric tons of debris and exchange technical expertise.
In terms of housing, the government has delivered 528 homes to date, with a goal of reaching 4,000 by December. The 'Registro Único de Vivienda' has been activated to census families with severe structural damage. Meanwhile, infrastructure recovery is underway at Maiquetía Airport, where 19 airlines are operating through temporary terminals, aiming to restore flight operations to over 60% of pre-earthquake levels.
