Venezuela recovers power grid capacity with new equipment

Venezuela is continuing efforts to stabilize its National Electric System (SEN) through the arrival of new spare parts and equipment for thermoelectric plants. These recovery operations are being conducted via alliances between the national government, private companies, and technical workers performing 24-hour maintenance shifts.

Recent seismic activity reportedly caused a loss of 800 megawatts (MW) in capacity, of which 600 MW have been recovered. Efforts have focused on stabilizing service in three states in the central-western region. Additionally, the Termozulia complex recently incorporated 300 MW into the system, and a high-power Siemens autotransformer is slated for installation at the El Furrial substation in Monagas.

To support long-term recovery, the government is planning a reform of the Electric System Law to allow for private sector participation in generation, transmission, and distribution. Officials have also noted plans to incorporate 7,400 MW through agreements with companies such as General Electric and IMPSA, as well as cooperation with China to reactivate units like Machine 6 at Planta Centro.
