Chile and Venezuela have begun restoring diplomatic relations following a meeting between Chilean President José Antonio Kast and Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting marks a significant shift after a complete diplomatic rupture in 2024.

Key priorities for the renewed engagement include the normalization of consular services and addressing the migration crisis. Currently, more than 700,000 Venezuelan nationals reside in Chile, while approximately 25,000 Chilean citizens live in Venezuela. The lack of functional consulates has left many citizens unable to process essential documents like passports.

President Kast stated that Chile is supporting the reconstruction of Venezuela's institutions and aims to restore full diplomatic and commercial functions in the coming months. To facilitate this, Chile has appointed Felipe Orellana as the new consul general in Caracas. Meanwhile, the Chilean government is also focused on managing irregular migration, with Kast claiming the administration has achieved almost total control over irregular border crossings.
