Steve Hanke proposes dollarization law for Venezuela

Economist Steve Hanke and Venezuelan Deputy Antonio Ecarri are working on a legislative proposal to officially dollarize the Venezuelan economy. The plan, reported by Fortune, aims to replace the bolívar with the U.S. dollar to combat hyperinflation, which is currently estimated at an annual rate of 400%.

The proposed law includes the total abolition of the Central Bank of Venezuela. This measure is intended to prevent the government from financing public spending through the continuous issuance of new money, thereby attempting to stabilize prices and protect the purchasing power of workers, educators, and pensioners.

Hanke, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, has been appointed as a Special Adviser on Economic, Monetary, and Energy Affairs by the National Assembly. He estimates there is a 50% to 80% chance that the dollarization law will be passed.
