Venezuela approves maritime emission reduction law
The Venezuelan National Assembly has approved a legislative project to adhere to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). This move aims to align national maritime regulations with standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The law establishes technical regulations to mitigate the environmental impact of maritime operations within Venezuelan territorial waters. Key measures include setting limits and controls on the discharge of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) from vessel exhaust systems. It also seeks to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds and substances that deplete the ozone layer.
Beyond environmental protection, the initiative is intended to promote energy efficiency in vessels and encourage the use of cleaner technologies and low-sulfur fuels. The legislation will strengthen the oversight capabilities of national maritime authorities, such as the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces and the Coast Guard Command, across the nation's coastline and exclusive economic zone. Additionally, the project aims to support the modernization of the PDV Marina and Petróleos de Venezuela fleets and contribute to the global climate agenda.
