Venezuela authorities seek identification of 22 earthquake victims

The Venezuelan government and the National Service of Forensic Medicine and Sciences (Senamecf) have issued an urgent call for families to help identify 22 individuals following the devastating double earthquake on June 24. Forensic experts have used necrodactylia, dentistry, and anthropology to establish presumptive identities. The remains are currently interred at the La Esperanza Cemetery in La Guaira.

Families are requested to visit the Senamecf headquarters in Bello Monte, Caracas, between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to provide interviews, photographs, and other documentation to finalize the identification process. A dedicated telephone line (0414-3604861) has also been established for guidance.

Official government figures report 6,509 fatalities and significant destruction of over 25,000 homes. However, civil society organizations report a much higher number of missing persons, with over 29,000 reports of individuals whose whereabouts remain unknown. Meanwhile, Funvisis has recorded 2,185 aftershocks in the region since the initial seismic events.
