Venezuela authorizes cremation of political prisoner José Breijo
Venezuelan authorities have authorized the cremation of the remains of José Breijo, a 73-year-old Uruguayan-Venezuelan political prisoner. The authorization from Prosecutor 140 of the Caracas Metropolitan Area follows nearly two months of delays since his death on August 6.
Breijo, who was under house arrest at the time of his passing, had previously spent years in the Tocuyito prison. He had been charged with terrorism-related offenses following the distribution of a photograph taken in a synagogue. His death was attributed to respiratory complications.
Human rights activist Carlos Julio Rojas stated that the documentation from the Prosecutor's Office and the Scientific, Criminal, and Investigative Body (CICPC) has been obtained, allowing for the retrieval of the remains from the Bello Monte morgue. The cremation will fulfill Breijo's final wish to have his ashes scattered at sea.
