Venezuela banking sector reacts to BCV monetary policy shifts
The Venezuelan banking sector and political figures are reacting to recent monetary policies implemented by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV). Pedro Pacheco Rodríguez, executive president of the Venezuelan Banking Association (ABV), stated that the sector views recent adjustments to active and passive interest rates as temporary measures intended to contain inflation and exchange rate volatility.
Pacheco noted that the high legal reserve requirement, which leaves only 27 percent of captured funds available to cover deposits and operating costs, directly impacts credit availability and financing costs. He expressed surprise at the rate adjustments, as the sector had anticipated a relaxation of the reserve requirement during the final quarter of the year.
Concurrently, National Assembly deputy Antonio Ecarri has called for the immediate resignation of BCV president Luis Pérez González. Ecarri criticized the current monetary policy, arguing that high interest rates and a legal reserve requirement of approximately 72 percent are stifling the economy and deterring investment. Ecarri further challenged the autonomy of the BCV, alleging that Pérez González holds multiple simultaneous government positions, which he claims violates constitutional and anti-corruption laws.
