Venezuela economy: US dollar rises 163.7% in 2026 amid GDP growth

The Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) reported that the official exchange rate for the US dollar closed August at 794.99 bolívares, representing a 6% increase during the month. The dollar has seen a cumulative increase of 163.7% so far in 2026, resulting in a 62% depreciation of the bolívar. The euro also rose, closing August at 922.69 bolívares.

Despite currency volatility, the BCV reported that Venezuela's GDP grew by 7.14% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. This marks the 21st consecutive quarter of economic growth.

Inflation remains a significant concern, with accumulated inflation reaching 175.5% through July. The government, led by acting president Delcy Rodríguez, has recently re-established relations with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
