Venezuela reports frequent seismic activity and thousands of aftershocks

Venezuela has experienced significant seismic activity, including several notable earthquakes and a high volume of aftershocks. Between October 2 and October 3, 2026, Funvisis reported a magnitude 4.8 earthquake in Sucre state, centered near Güiria and Irapa, and a magnitude 3.0 tremor near the border of Yaracuy and Falcón.

In a broader context, Funvisis has recorded over 2,152 aftershocks since major earthquakes occurred on June 24. Luz María Rodríguez, Director of the Geology and Earthquake Department at Funvisis, noted that these aftershocks are concentrated in Yaracuy and La Guaira due to energy release in those zones. She emphasized that continued seismic activity is expected for several months.

Weekly monitoring between September 25 and October 1 recorded 113 seismic events ranging from magnitude 1.5 to 4.2. Authorities have highlighted the need for increased monitoring stations, noting that 20 new pieces of equipment have been received from Germany to monitor faults between Yaracuy and Miranda.
