Venezuela oil negotiations: U.S. seeks stake in 17 fields FAST-MOVING
The Trump administration is engaged in high-level negotiations with Venezuela's interim government to secure long-term access to the country's vast oil resources. The potential deal, which could involve a 100-year lease model, focuses on more than a dozen productive oil fields, including those in the Orinoco Belt and around Lake Maracaibo. These targeted fields are estimated to hold approximately 90 billion barrels of oil, representing about one-third of Venezuela's total proven reserves.
If finalized, the agreement would allow American companies to develop these assets, with the resulting supplies guaranteed for the United States. Officials suggest this massive deal could more than double U.S. oil reserves, providing a strategic buffer as the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has recently hit its lowest levels in decades. The negotiations are reportedly being led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and interim President Delcy Rodríguez.
In a parallel development, Venezuela is reportedly considering withdrawing from OPEC. This move comes as the country seeks to strengthen economic ties with Washington and revitalize its energy sector, which has suffered from years of underinvestment and infrastructure decay. Venezuela's crude production in July reached 1.16 million barrels per day, showing signs of recovery but remaining well below historical peaks.
