Venezuela double earthquake kills nearly 100 Catholic school students

A double earthquake struck central Venezuela on 24 June 2026, causing the collapse of school buildings in Caracas, La Guaira and surrounding districts. The Venezuelan Catholic Education Association (AVEC) reported that almost 100 students from Catholic schools died, along with 91 school representatives and 13 staff members.

At least 20 AVEC‑affiliated schools suffered structural damage, leaving roughly 4,214 students in La Guaira unable to return to classrooms. AVEC President Ángel Tovar said authorities are evaluating temporary large‑tent classrooms, virtual learning, and a reconstruction plan that will meet strict seismic standards. Psychological and socioeconomic assistance is being provided to families and surviving students, while rescue teams have completed initial site assessments.

The ministries of Education and Health, together with church officials, are coordinating relief, insurance claims and rebuilding efforts to ensure safe schooling for the upcoming academic year.
