Venezuela earthquakes cause $19.6 bn damage, recovery underway

The World Bank’s rapid damage assessment estimates that the twin earthquakes of 24 June 2026 caused about **$19.6 billion** in direct physical damage in Venezuela. Residential buildings accounted for **47 %** of the losses, infrastructure **27 %**, and non‑residential structures **26 %**. The hardest‑hit areas were La Guaira state and the Distrito Capital, together absorbing roughly half of the total damage.

Official figures record **5,398 deaths**, **16,740 injuries**, and **approximately 18,000 people left homeless**. A total of **190 buildings collapsed** and **856 were severely damaged**. Over **100,000 people** have received food assistance from the World Food Programme, which is seeking **$80 million** to expand aid to half a million people within two months. The government has begun delivering temporary housing, with the first **200 apartments** handed over and plans to provide **4,000 homes by December** and **10,000 by 2027**.

Experts estimate the full reconstruction cost will exceed **$12‑15 billion**, requiring multilateral financing, private‑sector investment and continued international support. More than **2,200 international rescuers** from 30‑plus nations, along with tens of thousands of local volunteers, have been involved in rescue and debris‑removal operations. Calls from civil society and opposition figures emphasize the need for an integrated, transparent recovery plan and a state that can effectively serve its population.
