Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 4,333

The twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June caused the official death toll to reach 4,333, with 16,740 people injured and 6,462 rescued from the rubble. Authorities reported 215 new bodies identified in the latest count, while 315 victims remain unidentified.

Rescue operations continue in the hardest‑hit state of La Guaira. The government has set up 94 temporary camps that now shelter more than 18,000 displaced people and plans to construct about 25,000 new housing units for the roughly 17,900 families who lost their homes. A biometric census is being launched to register the displaced and improve aid distribution.

International assistance is flowing: the United Nations, Japan, the United Kingdom, Uruguay and other nations have sent relief teams, medical supplies, food, water and prefabricated housing. Venezuelan officials say talks are under way with the United States, Brazil, the IMF and the World Bank to unlock frozen assets and finance reconstruction. The disaster has been described as one of the worst in the country’s recent history, with damage to 856 buildings, 190 of them destroyed, and an estimated economic loss of about 6 % of GDP.
