Venezuela earthquake death toll reaches 6,509 two months later

Two months after devastating earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela, the official death toll has risen to 6,509. The seismic events primarily impacted La Guaira and several central and northern regions, causing widespread destruction of critical infrastructure and essential productive sectors.

More than 226,000 people have required medical attention since the disaster. Emergency brigades have evaluated 60,785 homes, determining that 11,001 are uninhabitable or pose a high risk. Currently, tens of thousands of displaced citizens remain in temporary shelters.

Recovery efforts are ongoing, with officials reporting that 600,790 tons of debris have been collected, representing approximately 28% of the estimated total. Experts suggest full clearing of ruins could take up to a year. The Organization of American States (OAS) has reiterated its support for the affected communities through the Inter-American Committee for Natural Disaster Reduction, while United Nations assistance is transitioning toward a phase of reconstruction.
