Venezuela earthquake death toll climbs to 4,490, injuries reach 16,740

The Venezuelan government updated the official figures for the twin earthquakes that struck the country on 24 June. The death toll rose by 157 to a total of 4,490, while the number of injured remained at 16,740. Authorities said 120,794 families have received assistance and 19,583 people are housed in 108 temporary camps, mainly in schools in Caracas and the neighboring states of Miranda and La Guaira. Relief distribution included 9,995 tonnes of food and 18.5 million litres of water. More than 30,500 volunteers and about 31,800 civil‑service officials are deployed in the response.

Nearly 18,000 homes were reported destroyed, with the government estimating a need for roughly 25,000 new dwellings. A biometric census has begun to gauge housing requirements, and the interim president Delcy Rodríguez pledged the delivery of the first 200 homes within the coming week. National Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez defended the decision not to publish a figure for the missing, noting that only 315 bodies remain unidentified. International solidarity efforts have also been reported, including aid coordination by Italian community groups and the Salesian Sisters, who are distributing meals, hygiene kits and clothing to displaced families.
