Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 4,561 as aid arrives

The twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on 24 June have killed 4,561 people and left 29,877 still missing, according to the latest official figures. The government reports that 128,324 families have received assistance and 20,231 people are housed in 107 temporary camps across the country. A combined effort of 2,471 international rescuers, 30,989 Venezuelan officials and 30,692 volunteers is supporting the response.

Medical teams from Mexico, the United States, Brazil and Spain have established field hospitals to treat respiratory, gastrointestinal and mental‑health conditions in the shelters. Brazil operates a mobile hospital in La Guaira, while Spain runs a centre in Caracas’s Parque del Este. Russia delivered about 10 tonnes of medical supplies aboard an AN‑124 cargo plane. Brazil’s president pledged reconstruction aid, and the Venezuelan government has begun a biometric registry to allocate prefabricated housing for displaced families with UN support. NASA satellite data show ground displacement of up to 60 cm in the affected coastal zones.
