Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 4,734 as families protest rescue methods

The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on 24 June has risen to 4,734, with 173 new fatalities reported. Authorities say 16,740 people remain injured and 17,907 are without homes. The government counts 20,903 occupants in 107 temporary camps and says it has assisted 128,324 families and 33,652 patients, though details are sparse.

Relatives of victims in La Guaira state accuse rescue crews of using heavy machinery that is damaging bodies still trapped under collapsed structures, calling for specialized urban search‑and‑rescue teams and forensic experts. Officials argue that rapid removal of concrete slabs could endanger any survivors still inside.

The state plans to deliver the first 200 newly built homes this week and has launched a biometric census to assess housing needs, estimating up to 25,000 homes may be required. A joint government‑opposition plan to strengthen democracy and address the seismic aftermath is set to begin on 1 August.
