Venezuela earthquake death toll climbs to 4,829, thousands left homeless
The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on 24 June has risen to 4,829, according to the National Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez. Injuries remain at 16,740 and 17,907 people are still without shelter. Authorities report 856 buildings damaged and 190 completely collapsed, forcing 106 temporary camps to house 20,857 displaced residents.
The government has launched a biometric census to determine housing needs, estimating that about 25,000 new homes will be required. The first 200 homes are slated for delivery this week. A joint reconstruction plan between the ruling party and opposition figures, led by former deputy Dinorah Figuera, is set to begin on 1 August, aiming at "fortalecimiento de la democracia" and coordinated relief efforts.
International assistance is arriving: Spain sent 42 tonnes of humanitarian supplies to Maiquetía airport, while the European Union approved an additional €20 million for emergency aid, rescue teams, and medical support. Over 1,284 aftershocks have been recorded, the latest a magnitude‑3.9 tremor felt in La Guaira.
