Venezuela hands over first homes to families displaced by June earthquakes

The Venezuelan government has begun delivering new housing to families affected by the twin earthquakes of 24 June. Over 240 families received fully equipped apartments in the Ciudad Tiuna complex in Caracas, and officials announced a plan to provide 4 000 homes by December, with a target of more than 10 000 additional units by 2027.

Temporary shelters remain essential: 107 transitory camps across Caracas, La Guaira, Miranda and Aragua now house 23 587 people, out of a total capacity of 27 822. Health staff—131 professionals from the expanded immunisation programme—were trained in La Guaira to ensure vaccination and disease‑prevention services in the camps.

The disaster toll has risen to between 5 208 and 5 278 dead, 16 740 injured and 17 907 left homeless. Authorities report about 856 buildings damaged, 190 collapsed, and 2.1 million tonnes of debris to be cleared. More than 128 324 families have received assistance, and the government pledged continued monthly housing deliveries to reach the 4 000‑home goal within the year.
