Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 6,301
The death toll from the dual earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 6,301, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez. The seismic events, which measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, primarily impacted the state of La Guaira, Caracas, and five other entities.
Medical authorities report that 73,356 people have received hospital care. In terms of housing, officials have evaluated 53,314 homes, finding 31,336 to be habitable, 12,411 with restrictions, and 9,567 to be at high risk. The government has distributed 287 homes to affected families so far.
Debris removal efforts have cleared approximately 483,525 tons of rubble, representing about 23% of the estimated total. However, concerns remain regarding the missing; while official reports have not provided a specific figure for the disappeared, independent monitoring platforms have estimated that nearly 60,000 people remain unaccounted for.
The World Bank estimates direct physical damages at $19.6 billion, warning that a slow reconstruction process could hinder the country's economic recovery for a decade. Meanwhile, the College of Engineers of Venezuela has called for updated seismic building standards and the creation of a National Seismic Commission to improve disaster risk reduction and urban planning.
